Death and the Penguin - Andrey Kurkov

Read: April 2004

When aspiring writer Viktor adopts a Penguin from the now bankrupt Kiev Zoo, his world enters the twilight of absurdity. Soon he has taken a job writing obituaries for a local paper and been drawn into the seedy underworld of the post-Soviet Russian Mafia. How long will Viktor be able to continue writing obituaries for other people, before the story of his own life has to be written? Will the presence of Misha the Penguin be able to shield him from the growing threat? Through it all, Misha the penguin waddles like some benevolent God, invisibly guiding Viktor through the adventure of his life. Few literary creations are as striking, affective and lovable, as Misha the penguin.
